In recent years, some major earthquakes occurred around the world which caused severe damages of buildings and facilities and a large number of casualties. Among them, the famous events are the Michoacan earthquake of 1985, the Armenia earthquake of 1988 and the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989. This paper reviews the geological conditions and the associated ground motion recordings for those three events to examine the effect of soil amplification during earthquakes. It is found that the major damages and casualties were primarily concentrated at areas where the subsoils are thick unconsolidated deposits. In general, the soft ground experienced larger amplitude, lower frequency and longer duration of strong shaking as compared to a rock site. Therefore, the area having soft subsoils in an earthquake country should be considered as a potential hazardous zone during earthquakes.
