The field of engineering geology is closely related to civil engineering. Since the 1950s, when the construction of hydroelectric power plants began in Taiwan, engineering geologists have collaborated with engineers to address engineering project issues and mitigate risks. The education of engineering geology in civil engineering departments significantly influences the development of the engineering geology profession and the quality of future engineering projects. Therefore, improving the engineering geology courses offered by civil engineering departments is of utmost importance. This paper begins by introducing the relationship between engineering and geology, the content of engineering geology, the professionals in the field of engineering geology, and the distinctions between engineers and geologists. It then provides a review of engineering geology education in Taiwan. Using information gathered from the websites of civil engineering departments, this paper analyzes the current state of engineering geology courses, their content, and the backgrounds of instructors. The engineering geology education experiences at National Taiwan University, National Cheng Kung University, and National Chiao Tung University are also highlighted. Subsequently, this paper addresses some common mistakes that arise in the current practice of engineering geology. Drawing upon an understanding of education and practice in engineering geology, as well as insights from experienced professionals in the field, we proposes prospects for engineering geology education in Taiwan. We suggest that undergraduate education in civil engineering departments should focus on cultivating the ability of civil engineers to appreciate the work (e.g., engineering geology models) done by engineering geologists. Graduates, particularly those specializing in geotechnical engineering, should learn how to understand, utilize, and even verify the engineering geology models created by engineering geologists. Collaborative courses, including field investigations, between civil engineering and geology departments are crucial and require joint efforts to promote cooperation between engineers and engineering geologists starting from the student stage.
